Has anyone ever heard of this?! Well, if you don’t even know what 5K…the k stands for kilometer, and 5k=3.1miles! Now we’re speaking American terms. But let’s go even further and talk runners terms! I am a HUGE fan of Groupons. If I’m not mistaken, part of being a virtuous woman (Proverbs 31) is to keep her eye out for bargains! So last week on Groupons, was 1/2 off of a race called “Color Me Rad”. It immediately got my attention because everybody had colors all over them. I read more into it, and it is a 5K race in the middle of July in OKC that throws colored cornstarch all over your white clothes as you run every 5 minutes! Sounds fun, right?! It really does! I got to thinking…I can run 3 miles! My friend, Jinny, was visiting and happened to tell me about an app called “Couch to 5K” that gets you off of the couch, and running a 5 K in 9 weeks.
So the training begins! I talked BJ into doing the race with me. He has already ran a half marathon and a 5K a month ago, but I mean…with me…staying with me every second…crossing the finish line…with me! In him doing this, he is giving up his pride and probably finishing about 10 minutes later than he normally would! But we are going to have fun…teamwork! We started our “training” Saturday, and then ran again today! It’s really designed perfectly for people who have been “on the couch”! You start out with a 5 minute warm-up, then run 1 minute, walk 1 1/2 minutes several times, and then end with a 5 minute cool down. The program takes 30 minutes. Let me tell you, it’s hard…but it is fun to hang out with BJ and have a goal in mind! Pregnancy and having babies has put me on the couch for the past 2 years, but I am slowly but surely getting off! I probably have one foot off so far!
I believe there is a good lesson to learn in almost every situation…so here’s my 2 cents! This couch to 5K is a healthy way to work up to running 3.1 miles! There are many who are “on the couch” Christians who aren’t really doing anything to further their “walk” with the Lord. Who ever said we are supposed to just get up and run a marathon?! It takes time, and training. The first step is to get up off the “couch” and start slow. With the Lord’s help and relying on Him, we’ll be running in no time!!
