Today, we had the best time as a family!\u00a0 We all hiked about 30 minutes to a believer man\u2019s coffee garden.\u00a0 You can\u2019t just go to anyone\u2019s garden, you have to be invited.\u00a0 And most wouldn\u2019t want you to go to their garden, because they are afraid of taboo!\u00a0 But Peter is a believer, and not believe in that anymore!<\/p>\n

June and December are HUGE months for people here, because it is when the coffee trees are ripe!\u00a0 So they told us all about the trade, simply pick off the \u201cberry\u201d if it is red!\u00a0 Easy enough\u2026even my kids got to participate!\u00a0 It was so much fun.\u00a0 BJ wished that the berries smelled like coffee!<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll teach you the coffee process\u2026I bet you didn\u2019t know all of the hard work that goes into your yummy cup of Starbucks coffee!<\/p>\n

-The coffee beans grow on trees, and they are red when they are ready to be picked, green when they aren\u2019t ready.\u00a0 If they look like red grapes, pick them!<\/p>\n

-Next, Peter had a grinder machine, where you pour the beans in and turn the wheel, and it peels of the skin\u2026leaving only the white bean (still no smell.)\u00a0 If the farmers do not have a machine (close your eyes if you love coffee!), their kids put them in between their teeth and bite the skin off!!\u00a0 \u2026But I\u2019m sure the coffee you\u2019re drinking is from the machine \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

-After this, they will lay the beans out on a big tarp, spread the coffee beans out, and wait for them to dry.\u00a0 It takes about 3-4 days for it to completely dry.\u00a0 If it rains, then they roll up the tarps so the rain doesn\u2019t get to the beans.<\/p>\n

-Last, they put the beans in a huge coffee bag and send them on an airplane when it gets full.\u00a0 A big bag of coffee is 50kg, and they will get about $100 for that.\u00a0 I know that doesn\u2019t seem like not very much, but it\u2019s a lot of money for someone in the bush\u2026especially when minimum wage is about $1\/hour!<\/p>\n

We had a great time getting to help the believers, and hear them tell us their testimonies.\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 And the way Peter quoted scripture from memory\u2026it was very convicting.\u00a0 BJ and I said that they (him and his wife) challenged us to start memorizing verses in the national language! \"Picking<\/a><\/p>\n

Super cool experience!\u00a0 So next time you see Papua New Guinea coffee at Starbucks or somewhere else\u2026think of Peter and other guys here in Wusuraambya who have the Gospel and thank the Lord for them!<\/p>\n
