Scared into Reading

May 29, 2012 by Brian and Bailey Pruett

I recently returned from a week of meetings at our home office in Arizona. It was a very humbling experience and one that I wouldn’t fully process until I got home and starting thinking through everything. It was the first step in our transition into leadership and Garry’s transition out of the Philippine program. Those of you who know me well would understand just how nervous it makes me because I purchased and started reading a book about leadership. Yeah, it’s that bad. I’m reading The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. My older brother and a couple of other leaders I’ve grown to respect have really gleaned a lot from Maxwell, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try and do so myself. My brother is also teaching a class in our church based on The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader’s Day by John Maxwell which has been a real catalyst to getting me to break down and start reading a “how-to book.”

Please continue to pray for us as we venture down a road we’ve never been down. We have said it before, and it’s worth saying again: we are diving headfirst into this because we are backed by an amazing team. We have a tremendous team in the Philippines and USA with NTMA. We also have our family, friends and supporters who make it possible through prayer and giving for us to continue in this ministry. I don’t say that lightly, and we know that our team doesn’t take their responsibility lightly either. It’s just awesome to be part of a group like that.

Proverbs 13:20
“Walk with the wise and become wise;
associate with fools and get in trouble.”

    I’m definitely not a “read for fun” kind of guy. Like you, I do a lot of reading but it’s more along the lines of researching and gathering information than anything else – it’s almost all technical articles. The first chapter of the book suggested that I read like 10 books a year on leadership…I’ll be doing good if I make it through one or two! Oh well, I have to remember that the guy who wrote that suggestion has written more books than I’ve read!

    I hear you about getting scared into reading Brian. That’s pretty much what gets me reading too …other than doing an awful lot of it “in the line of duty” I generally don’t read to relax. Sounds like exciting days when you get back to the Philippines.
