Canned Meat

April 22, 2012 by Brion and Annette Kendzora

Last Wednesday, Brion and I tried our hand at using a pressure cooker to can meat. It was a very unique and interesting experience, but one that I would be ok with never having again :) I am going to blame it on my heightened sense of fear and over protection from pregnancy, but that thing scared the living daylights out of me. If I didn’t have Brion, I’m not sure I could have done that alone. You may be wondering why on earth we canned meat in the first place. Seems pretty weird and maybe even disgusting, I know, but it is all part of our jungle camp training course here at MTC Canada.

In the beginning of June, we start a 6 week course called “jungle camp”. We take 2 weeks to build a temporary home in the woods on our campus and then we spend 4 weeks living in that house. There are certain limitations and rules that we have to follow in building our house and certain requirements we have to meet.

We have to secure our poles/frame using only duck tape and twine. We will cover the roof of our house in plastic and put plastic around the sides as well. We will cut holes for screen windows. We will build a wood burning stove to cook on, put in a kitchen sink, wire in at least one light bulb, make a bucket drip shower, build all our seating and our table, build our bed and build all our kitchen counters and shelves.

We are very excited for our jungle camp experience and really have no idea what to expect, especially with brining a six week old baby along for the ride :) I know God is going to teach us amazing things as we deal with life in a different way for these 6 weeks. I have a feeling that this will make me even more grateful for my bathroom, washers and dryers and my kitchenaid!
