Recently I had the privilege of attending a youth conference with twenty teens and leaders from the youth group at my home church. One of the lessons considered the various roles of Paul’s companions. Barnabas played the role of a mentor, discipling Paul. Silas was a companion, encouraging and working alongside Paul. Finally, Timothy was Paul’s disciple. The speaker challenged us to make sure we intentionally seek to be discipled, to work alongside others, and to be a discipler. I know we will always be growing and in need of believers to come alongside of us to sharpen us, but the idea of teaching others is overwhelming. Later in the conference one of the girls came to me and said, “You’re my ‘Barnabus’.” Wow! What a privilege to have a teen who is receptive to that influence in her life, but what a tremendous responsibility to fulfill!
