Recently I was chatting with a coworker in Paraguay when he commented, “It’s going to be messy.” These were his words of encour-agement when describing some of the transitions I will soon be facing as I move.
My first reaction was along the lines of Wow. That’s not very nice. I can’t believe he is saying this! That makes going to Paraguay sound awful. But in a matter of seconds I realized – Yeah. It IS going to be messy. Communication is complicated and often tangled in our everyday life, proving life is messy without language and culture barriers. There are going to be days and weeks where I feel isolated, confused and out of place. There will be copious embarrassing moments. Hopefully I’ll have the good humor to share many of them with you. There will be times of misunderstanding and miscommunication. There will be inconveniences and adjustments to make. There will be hard days. And yes, amidst it all, there will be small victories and good days. Amidst the mess I will have much to learn about our Faithful and Forgiving Heavenly Father.
So, to hear someone who has seen and helped many others move to Paraguay and transition successfully into a new phase of life admit “it’s going to be messy,” IS encouraging. It will be worth the mess. I’ll be heading into the fray in April or May, and I appreciate your prayers as I plan to purchase tickets and choose a flight date!
