I just realized, through the gentle reminder of my husband, that I have never let you know about my ministry on the Calvary Christian School basketball court. That started around the middle of November with a couple of open gym times and then regular practices for the high school girls. God has put 13 young, impressionable, fun girls in my path. I thank Him for each one of these girls that make up the basketball team.
My responsibility as the assistant coach has been conditioning and fundamentals and whatever else the head coach needs from me. I’ve even had the privilege (tongue in cheek) of driving the school mini bus to the Sports Zone practice courts. Boy did I have to get prayed up for that one! It has been a fun time with the girls and has been a good way for me to get in a few laps from time to time. But for me this time hasn’t been all about basketball.
As much I enjoy shooting, drilling and learning basketball with the girls I am enjoying even more the times I get to share how important Christ is in the every day things of their young lives. If they can begin to see Him in their world at this age, think how much easier it will be later. Although 14 – 15 years old is a very tough age. We’ve had some very special talks during our “girl talk” sessions at the end of practices. We kick Coach Matthews off the court and just sit and visit for a few minutes, always closing in prayer. I love that! Bus rides prove to be a good time to get to know them too. As do locker rooms, especially after a heart breaking loss.
FYI: we have yet to win our first game but they are improving and losing with a good attitude. I have grown to love these girls! I will surely miss them when the season ends but until then I just pray God will continue to use me in a positive way in their lives. They did present me with a signed basketball for my 30th birthday (gotta love ‘em) which I will treasure along with the memories. Please pray for me to that end and also pray that if God would be glorified in a win for us that that would be soon coming. ^_^
