When we travel to other countries and are confronted by unimaginable realities there of suffering, poverty and spiritual need, our hearts are moved with compassion. And while compassion is a reasonable beginning, is compassion alone enough? For the recent young widow raising two children, her finances barely enough to make frayed ends meet, is giving her money really enough? Without learning language, I wouldn’t be able to offer much more.
Conversations of the heart simply aren’t best suited to using a translator. Which of us would long to share our deepest grief, our nagging doubts, our sinful choices using the ‘telephone game’ mode of communication? Only within the context of an intimate friendship, in the heart language of the young widow, that she can begin to express her heartache, her struggle, and her doubt that God even sees or cares. — Casie
