God’s Beloved Son

September 9, 2011 by Danny and Diana Shaylor

Beginning in Genesis, God’s revelation of Himself to mankind began (to use the analogy of a stream) as a tiny trickle inching forward, joined by other rivulets till a full blown stream was rushing along joining other streams till at last it all came together into a mighty surging river that burst not into an ocean of water but into the sea of humanity.

This was God’s divine secret, expressed in many forms and symbols, in different activities, prophecies and signs, types, analogies and sacrifices throughout the old testament.  Think of Adam himself, Isaac, Joseph, Melchizedek, Moses, the serpent, the rock, the manna, the Tabernacle, David, Solomon and the untold number of sacrifices.  These all pointed forward to God’s chosen One.  From that tiny trickle and on through the ages God’s self revelation had always been centered in His Son.

And then finally Jesus the Christ , the Father’s divine secret, stood there on the bank of the Jordan river being introduced by God to the universe as “MY BELOVED SON IN WHOM I DELIGHT”  This was no ordinary introduction! Mark 1:10, ” The heavens were opened”, meaning to split, to rend, to divide with violence.  God could have introduced Him in many ways, but as the perfect, final, grand completion of God’s revealing Himself, he introduced Him as MyBeloved Son!  I like to think of that joyous proclamation of, as it were ,God hanging a cosmic banner that read, for all creation to see and contemplate, I LOVE MY SON, I LOVE MY SON, I LOVE MY SON!!!!!.  The designation ‘MY BELOVED SON” wasn’t thought up by God on the spur of the moment for the occasion at the Jordan for that moment in time. No, this came from the heart of an eternal ongoing relationship  between Father and Son finally revealed to mankind.  The Beloved Son Himself  later testified to the words of the Father, When He said speaking to the Father ” We are One” and “Thou didst love me before the foundation of the world”, John Chapter 17.
