Duraatmatnuyak, a\u00a0Wusaraambyan Woman, carries a baby in her hand-made string bag (bilum) as she\u00a0hikes home from her garden on the grass airstrip,\u00a0dug by hand for 7 years.. She\u00a0carries sweet potatoes, taro, spinach-like greens, and firewood on her back and head with a bush knife on top.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Women lead a hard life in Wusuraambya.\u00a0 They carry heavy loads from their gardens to their homes everyday because there is no refrigeration in the village.<\/p>\n

Often they hike one or two hours one way to their gardens since they are inherited and not necessarily close to their bamboo huts.<\/p>\n

Not only do the women carry vegetables but often we see them carrying\u00a0 firewood and a child along with the sweet potatoes, taro, and “greens”.\u00a0 Often the weight of what they are carrying exceed their body weight. They do not have shoes!<\/p>\n
