{"id":10,"date":"2006-11-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-21T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-08-15T21:55:03","modified_gmt":"2009-08-16T01:55:03","slug":"where-does-the-apostrophe-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/dave-brendle\/2006\/11\/21\/where-does-the-apostrophe-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Where does the apostrophe go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartImportPhoto--><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/dave-brendle\/files\/2006\/11\/297_6254.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-104\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;margin-bottom: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/dave-brendle\/files\/2006\/11\/297_6254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" \/><\/a><!--EndImportPhoto--><\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#8217;s co-worker, Carol Kaptain, has been reading through the revision of Volume 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;Carol is an NTM translation consultant, so she reviews the material specifically with transfer in mind.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>She recently noticed the apostrophe in the title for Ephesians, Lesson 3.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The title stated:&nbsp;&quot;Paul wrote about the believer&rsquo;s past, present and future.&quot;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Carol noticed that we used&nbsp;the singular form of the possessive in the title <strong>(believer&#8217;s)<\/strong> and several places in the lesson, but that we also used&nbsp;the plural form <strong>(believers&#8217;)<\/strong> several times in the lesson.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Carol made this comment note: &quot;I&#8217;d suggest being consistent &#8211; this is going to be more than placement of an apostrophe when transferred into other languages.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Most tribal languages&nbsp;have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a singular possessive (mine) <\/li>\n<li>an inclusive plural possessive (ours and yours) <\/li>\n<li>an exclusive plural possessive (ours, but not yours) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this specific example,&nbsp;it really doesn&#8217;t matter a lot in English where the apostrophe goes.&nbsp; We would understand it, whether we used singular or possessive.&nbsp; (That&#8217;s why neither Mr. McIlwain nor I noticed it.)<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s critical to&nbsp;be precise&nbsp;about possession in other&nbsp;languages.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pray for Carol as she reviews the lessons with transfer in view.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Pray also&nbsp;that we will be precise as we revise&nbsp;even the simple things such as where the apostrophe goes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the purposes for revising the Building on Firm Foundations series is to rewrite anything that would be difficult to transfer from English into other languages.  <br \/>We catch a lot, but not everything.
