So, just what are ‘titeres’? Well, they’re soft, cute, cuddly, have a personality all their own & are definitely entertaining to watch. No, they’re not well-trained family pets. In fact, they’re not even alive at all. Titeres are what Spanish-speakers call puppets.
Sherri & I are convinced that our first ministry responsibility is to our family. “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Eph 6:4) As a result, we’re thrilled when our family is able to be involved together in ministry to others. Puppet ministry is just such an outreach opportunity for our entire family.
We’ve been privileged this year to be able to help with the puppet ministry started a number of years ago by a fellow missionary with New Tribes Mission, Allison Lucht. Each year Allison puts together a team of missionary kids (MKs) who help her develop new puppet shows. These shows are then presented several times during the school year at a variety of places.
We’re thankful our family was able to join the current team for this school year. As an added blessing to our family, we were able to bring some of the puppets we used in our own puppet ministry in Paraguay back with us this summer. Now they’re continuing their career in Mexico.
So far this year we’ve presented the puppet show at several churches both in Chihuahua City & in surrounding towns, at a public park & even in the middle of a street! Back in Paraguay, Sherri & David produced & directed our puppet shows, while Bethany & Matthew were too young to handle the major puppets. Now, however, all four of us are full-blown puppeteers, & what fun it is!
This year’s show relates the stories of Jonah & Noah, emphasizing everyone’s need to trust in God alone for their salvation. At one show we even had the opportunity to step out from behind the stage & give our personal testimonies. This allowed us to clearly present the Gospel by relating how each of us came to put our trust in Christ alone to pay for our sins.
Puppet ministry is a unique ministry. A unique ministry in that in opens doors through which the Gospel is introduced by way of a medium that’s non-threatening & is received by both young & old alike.
“To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (1 Corinthians 9:22)
