October. Harvest time. For the Tarahumara Indians living in western Chihuahua state in the mountains known as the Sierra Tarahumara, it is a time of gathering in the corn harvest. This year, the harvest was good and everyone is rejoicing. But there is another harvest in the Sierras that is being rejoiced over this October: more new believers among the Tarahumara!
Our fellow New Tribes missionaries, Tony & Lauren Finch, have lived and worked among the Tarahumara Indians for many years. During that that time, they have played a major role in planting a Tarahumara church in the community in which they live and helped it grow to maturity. Now they have turned their attention to outlying Tarahumara communities and have been teaching chronologically from Creation to Christ in the many places where they have been invited to come and teach.
This Fall as they wrapped up the teaching in two communities, we were praying earnestly for them as they taught on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. This was a critical time and the culmination of 18 months of teaching once a week in these communities. As promised, God’s Word did not return void and many in both communities placed their trust in Christ alone for their salvation!
Over the last few weeks 35 new Tarahumara believers have been baptized in 2 different communities. Here is a link to a video the Finches posted of one of the baptisms. It is a real blessing to watch this and listen to the two musicians playing in the background. They are from the Tarahumara church and are singing in Tarahumara.
We are so privileged to be a part of the New Tribes Mission team reaching the unreached tribal people of Mexico. Thanks to all of you who are part of our family’s ministry through your prayers & financial support.
