Bible Verses
Jer 3:1 If a man divorces his wife and goes she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares the Lord.
Jer 2:12-13 Go proclaim these words, “Return, faithless Israel, declares the Lord. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares the Lord. I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt.. and that you have not obeyed my voice declares the Lord. (22) Return, O faithless sons; I will heal your faithlessness…”
Jer 3:22 For my people are foolish; they know me not; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are wise in doing evil! But to do good they know not.
Devotional Thoughts
God’s love for Israel just amazes me. Over and over they forsook him. And still, he remained faithful to them. He continued to give them the opportunity to turn back to him. Even though they were just like an adulteress prostitute, going after many other gods (Jer 1:1). God said he would not be angry with them forever (Jer 2:12) Even though they were more wise regarding evil, and didn’t know how to do what was right (Jer 3:22). He still loved them.
His steadfast love endures forever (Ps 107, Ps 136). Ps 36:5-7 says, “Your steadfast love extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. How precious is your steadfast love, O God!” Jer 31:3 “You have loved me with an everlasting love; that is why you have continued your faithfulness to me.” If God treated Israel like that, with all their failures, and all their rebellious acts against him, He certainly isn’t going to love us any less!
In all God’s dealings with Israel, he longed for a people whom he could lavish his love upon, to communicate to the rest of the world, how much he loves us. Even though Israel failed to appropriate it, He still chose to love them… and still does. He will still fulfill His promises to Israel, even though now, for a time, his promises for them are on hold, due to their rebellion.
God’s love is so amazing. I wish His love for me would motivate me more than it does. Which I guess says something about my understanding of it and appreciation for it. I certainly don’t want to be like Israel in how I appropriate God’s love for me! How about you.
