Bible Passages
Col 1:9-11 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kinds of good fruit. All the while you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
Col 1:15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
Col 1:19-20 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything… this includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies.. yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ… you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault
Col 1:27 God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.
Jer 51:15-16 The Lord made the earth by his power and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens. When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens roar with rain. He causes clouds to rise over the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses.
Jer 51:19 But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people…
Rom 11:33-36 Oh how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back? For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.
Devotional Thoughts
Our God is certainly no idol! And yet we so easily replace him with created things. Things like possessions, money, popularity… and for those of us in full time ministry, our ministry can even be a replacement for God. In these passages today we are reminded of the greatness of our God, and that Jesus was the perfect display of God on earth!
Jer 51:19 He is the Creator of EVERYTHING that exists.
Jer 51:15-16
- The Lord made the earth by his power and he preserves it by his wisdom.
- With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens.
- When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens roar with rain.
- He causes clouds to rise over the earth.
- He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses.
Next time you witness a thunderstorm, every time you hear the thunder, think of it as God speaking. When you see the lightning with the rain, can you picture God opening his storehouse and letting the rain pour out? That is our God!
Rom 11:33 Oh how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
At the same time, while God is the awesome sovereign creator, he choose to take all of that and bottle it up into a man, Jesus! Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. (Col 1:15 NLT) God in ALL HIS FULLNESS was pleased to dwell in Christ. (Col 1:19)
But the kicker of this doctrine takes it one step further! This awesome sovereign God, the creator of everything that exists, who was pleased to dwell in Christ in all his fullness, has also taken that visible image of the invisible God and placed it/Him IN US! (Col 1:27) “This is the secret: Christ lives IN YOU!”
Prayer Outline
This should give us tremendous hope for our daily Christian life. Here’s a few things these verses assure us of, and what I am praying for you to grow in.
- The sovereign creator, God IN ALL HIS FULLNESS, the one who was dwelling in Christ, dwells in us. Which means we have all the resources and the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. (Ephesians 1:17-20) Learn to depend on Him.
- If Christ is the visible image of the invisible God, and He is living in us, it’s His life that is going to display the image of God, not us! We just need to be available and let him.
- We have within us the resources to know His will! Christ in you, the fullness of the invisible God, the one who has great riches and wisdom and knowledge! (Rom 11:33) The one who stretched forth the heavens with His own understanding. (Jer 51:15) He is living within you! And He wants to do the work of God through you. Let Him.
