Ps 127:1b Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Devotional Thoughts
In PNG, security is one of the biggest employers in the country. As an organization, we have security guards that protect our property at night. But, anywhere money is exchanged, there is always security guards at the exits, checking your bags and your pockets to make sure you are only leaving with what you are supposed to have. Most of the big retail businesses have security in the parking lots outside as well, looking after your vehicle so no one tries to break in while you are in the store. This is just the way of life where we live. But, according to Ps 127:1 unless the Lord is the one watching over us, all that security is in vain. It begs the question, where is my dependence?
We read a couple days ago, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” (Ps 118:8-9) Living in a 3rd world country where there is the constant possibility of getting held up or pick pocketed, we have learned to never let your guard down, and to constantly be aware of your surroundings. But the reality is, while it’s wise to be careful, and to be aware, and avoid particular places, the constant vigilance on security can cause paranoia at times.
Ps 125:1 reminds us that “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.” Our trust can not be in our vigilance, or our methods, or our security guards at night. Our trust needs to be completely in the Lord!
Ps 118:7, 14 The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. (14) The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation
Ps 128:1 Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord who walks in his ways!
Matt 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Declarations:
- The Lord is on my side, He is my helper. I can trust God implicitly with my personal safety and security! While I need to be wise, my life, my family, my possessions, everything, are in His hands.
- When I trust God, I will be blessed with peace and rest! I can give all my burden of worry, anxiety over safety to Him, and take from Him his easy yoke and light burden.
- The Lord is my strength, my song and my salvation
