Devotional Thoughts
How great is your God? I mean truly? Not what does the Bible say, nor what can you give mental assent to, but truly how great is your God. If you were David as a 15 year old boy, standing in the valley facing a 9 foot tall giant, would your God be greater? What about your financial challenges? Your health challenges? What in your life is overwhelming you? Is your God greater?
In 1 Samuel 17:37, while standing before the king, after seeing the giant, David declared, “THE LORD who rescued me from the lion and the bear WILL rescue me from this Philistine!” And when David faced the giant, he said, “you come to me with a sword, spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies…”
David’s God was greater than anything he could face on earth.
- Psalm 33:6-9 The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were crated. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born… let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him…. the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken.
- Psalm 33:17-22 Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory, for all its strength, it cannot save you. But the Lord watches over those who fear him, whose who rely on his unfailing love… We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield.
In Romans Paul prayed for the church in Rome with these words, (Romans 15:13) I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Paul’s testimony of his own life and ministry was that (Rom 15:17-18) “I have reason to be enthusiastic about all Christ has done through me… yet I dare not boast about anything except what Christ has done through me…”
May we learn to live with greater joy and peace. Not living in our own strength, or dependent on our own “warhorse” (whatever that may be), but confident in the God who merely spoke the heavens into place and simply breathed the stars into the sky!
