In this “new” role as Personnel Director, I feel the weight of shepherding a weary, anxious, hurting flock—some feeling wounded by leaders, coworkers, even by God. At times I feel it too. There’s days I barely have time to open my computer. I spend most of the day in conversation with those who need my attention.

Scripture Insight:

In 1 Samuel 21:7, we find a haunting detail: Doeg was “detained before the LORD.” That moment led to the slaughter of 85 priests and their families (1 Sam 22:17–19). Why would God detain Doeg? Why allow such devastation?

David was unraveling—grieving Jonathan, fleeing Saul, lying to Ahimelech. No Psalms are recorded for this moment. And yet, God was watching. God was involved. He detained Doeg.

It’s unsettling. God didn’t just allow the pain—He orchestrated a detail that made it worse. Why?

Because God is into the details. Psalm 37:23 says He directs every step and delights in every detail. Psalm 38:9 says He hears every sigh. Deuteronomy 32:4 reminds us His ways are perfect—even when they feel cruel.

Application:

In distress, we blame, rewrite, cry “It’s not fair!” David did too (Psalm 59:4). But he also chose trust: “You are my refuge and strength” (Psalm 59:16–17).

Ecclesiastes 7:13–14 urges us to accept what God does—prosperity and adversity alike. Jeremiah 29:11–13 promises His plans are good, and He listens when we seek Him.

Prayer:

Lord, you are my refuge, my place of peace, safety, and rest when I am in distress. Give me strength to trust You in the details—even when they hurt.

Reflection Questions:

What “small detail” in your life feels like it’s making things worse, not better?

Reflect on a time when God allowed something painful (for yourself, or someone else) that later revealed His purpose?
