Independence Day

September 16, 2013 by Derrick and LaShawn Dobbs

Today, September 16th, is Papua New Guinea’s Independence Day. They gained it on September 16, 1975. It so happens to be the year I (Derrick) was born so it is so easy to know how old PNG is (38) this year.

We had a fun day today celebrating the holiday. We flew our PNG flags and went down the hill to a parade and saw the PNG Defense Force show some of their formations.

Just like America, the Papuans really take pride in their country. They are very festive. There are always plenty of folks dressed up in their red, black, yellow and white.  One of the things we noticed is that they like to decorate their vehicles and drive around as they honk their horns.

Sir Michael Somare was in attendance today of the festival we went too. He is considered the father of the country and has his face on the 50 Kina bill. He is from this area and has served as Prime Minister many years here.  (Even up to last year.)
