Where can someone go to be challenged, inspired, informed, and connected with the world of missions? Over the last 15 years Dawn and I have made several trips to the lower mainland to take in the biggest missions event in BC – Missionsfest Vancouver. Held annually at Canada Place (the Vancouver Trade and Convention Center) at the end of January, it draws world class speakers, hundreds of missions organizations, and tens of thousands of people to share the passion of reaching the world with the Gospel. I always benefit from the event personally but our tradition has been to bring others along to share it with.
This year I brought Sidney and Cassia as I knew this would be their last chance for four years and it would be a great way to spend time with my kids. I was also looking for another young person that would be blessed by the experience. My first two prospects didn’t work out, but with one week to go I got an email about a young man named Zach who is eagerly serving the Lord and interested in missions. The 16 hr drive from his town was too far for the weekend but very quickly the Lord provided the plane tickets for him.
We made the most of our time taking in everything we could. Zach found his way through the hundreds of booths to talk to many Bible schools and mission organizations in a relatively short time, while I roamed about with the kids and connected with about 16 friends over the day and a half.
Catching up with missions minded friends, time with my kids, and opening the eyes of young people to needs and opportunities make this trip worthwhile. But there’s something about missionsfest that is special and unique – that keeps me coming back. It seems that missions is easily marginalized but for this weekend it is the central focus. At missionsfest MISSIONS is a big deal.
