A month ago we passed a milestone in the Bakken family as Sidney’s 13th Birthday began the exciting era of teenagers in our home! Such a significant occasion needed an equally significant celebration with manly proportions of risk, challenge and adventure – an overnight mountain snowmobile trip with his dad, grandpa, brother, and four friends. (Ask me if I’m crazy). The masculine activities included, riding snowmobiles, building a fire, eating meat, sleeping in a cabin on the mountain, watching old episodes of ‘the A-team’, and digging out stuck snowmobiles to ride them some more.
Above the cold walk to the outhouse over five feet of alpine snow the sky was saturated with innumerable stars. After a dinner of meat on a bun, by the light of a few candles, we each told Sidney the qualities we appreciated about him and took a turn to pray for God to bless his life. We even sang a couple of songs together. Later we drifted off to sleep on the old lumpy mattresses as the full moon peered in the window. It was an experience none of us will forget.
