Literacy certificate ceremony photo’s – as promised!

June 30, 2011 by Nadia Hattingh

We are so proud of the students who received certificates for doing the eMwinika Literacy course in our community!

The group picture is of the students:

· both those that were able to finish the whole course (pink certificates)

· and the remedial class who managed to complete the first Primer (yellow certificates – and who will continue with the course after we return from our home assignment).

· One student received a certificate for participation (white).

· The purple certificates are for those who finished their teacher training and who can continue to teach literacy on their own.

Also in the picture our community leader who is holding up one of our graded readers!

The small cards are Library cards that enable those who received certificates to take out books from our community library. They are very proud of their “cartões” – the student on the right (back) did not even think to hold up his pink certificate, but proudly shows his Library card. (He is a leader in the minority religion and plans to get ready to teach the people where he serves).

The other picture is of our small community leaders. On the table are the primers and graded readers – all written in their mother tongue! These are some the first books ever printed in the eMwinika language. Our friends and neighbours wrote most of the stories in the Literacy course books and they feel a keen sense of ownership of these booklets. Most picked the books up and immediately tried to read it! 🙂 We pray that the interest in learning to read will spread and that many will learn to read so that God’s Word will be opened up and speak to their hearts. Of course, at the same time, we ask prayer for the Translation project! Phil and his team of Mwinika helpers are still on schedule with the translation, despite so many other “hats” that need their attention. Elin plan to start with literacy classes in their community before the end of this year. Please pray for a thrust to learn and understand God’s Word!
