One afternoon at a Mwinika house

April 27, 2013 by Nadia Hattingh

The people of the area where we are doing the Literacy classes are far from our or the Henderson’s houses and not so much used to have their pictures taken as our closer friends and neighbours. They love to pose for pictures and then watch the results on the little camera screen!

Two little tykes, shy to have their picture taken. The sticks with the plastic bottles on top, are their toy “cars”. 🙂

NothingMore’s wife and daughter plaiting hair. They are sitting on a woven mat made from a type of palm’s leaf that were cut in strips for weaving by hand. They use the mats to sit on during the day and sleep in during the night – it is made so that it forms a pocket where you can get into to stay nice and warm during the night. Multi-purpose indeed! Chair, workspace, bed and blanket – all in one!

The man himself! He is making a basket to carry fish or other food in called an “etjakuntja”. It’s like a biodegradable shopping basket!

The baby was promptly plunked down to have his picture taken! He doesn’t look too happy about it…
