The new Literacy classes that started in our community last week, has proved to be a challenge… but also a blessing!
The first day only TWO students and one helper (teacher in training) arrived for the classes! As it got later and later and I realized that the others are not coming, I was struggling not to feel hugely discouraged.
Later, at my wits’ end and at the feet of my Lord, He encouraged me so clearly and so appropriately! I knew then, that I had to continue with the classes, but most importantly: I have to love my neighbours more than ever!
The second day 5 students came, but 3 announced afterwards that due to family engagements, they will not be able to come the next day… The Mwinika culture condemns anyone who does not attend these ceremonies or visit sick family members. In fact, they stand a good chance to get shunted or cursed. We were learning (still!) how to work with the culture, not against it, knowing that only the Truth can set them free. So, we were thinking of different ways to help these students to catch up. Mostly our students need the blessing of their chiefs/kings to attend the classes. Pray with us that when there are believers, they will take the responsibility of the Literacy.
The third day it rained! Not just a little bit, but a HUGE storm! The thunder was so loud at times that I could hardly hear myself, but we continued with the class under a roof/alpendra area – moving from under the cashew tree (our class room). Again it was only the two students and one helper. They are very enthusiastic though and worked with so much motivation and concentration. I would continue if it was only these three!
The forth day… more students arrived and by the firth day there were 10 students and 3 helpers (our limited for now)! 🙂
Becoming all things to all people to save some… Paul’s words to the Corinthians are speaking to our hearts as we are putting ourselves in a position to serve, and not to be served. God reminded us that we are not here to find approval from people, but to BE CHRIST to our neighbours. Loving them, even when they seem to reject what we came to give.
Pray for the Mwinika to find Christ – soon!
