They are sitting on a woven mat made from a type of palm\u2019s leaf that were cut in strips for weaving by hand.  They use the mats to sit on during the day and sleep in during the night \u2013 it is made so that it forms a pocket where you can get into to stay nice and warm during the night.  Multi-purpose indeed! He is making a basket to carry fish or other food in called an \u201cetjakuntja\u201d.
