When I (Janet) say that I teach language and culture learning at the Missionary Training Center, I’m often asked what languages I teach. It’s probably hard to realize that we don’t teach one particular language here. We basically show people how to learn a previously unwritten language (and any other language, for that matter.) So it’s interesting. In the process, though, the students DO get some practice learning a couple languages, depending on who’s available that speaks another language fluently. This year my small class of 4 worked on Korean for 14 class periods. Again, our purpose wasn’t to learn Korean, but to learn what’s currently believed to be the best way to learn another language. It was tough because of the pronunciation and the grammar (it’s supposedly one of the hardest languages for an English speaker to learn!) But I was really proud of my students…they did great! And I believe they all realize that they can, in fact, learn another language (or two or three!). Click on the link below this paragraph if you’d like to hear how to make tea (in Korean). Anyway, it’s a great way to end the semester. Now we have a month-long Christmas break, then we’ll come back and start right off with some pretty tough classes. The first two months of their next semester is intense, to say the least. Please pray for them and for us teachers that we’ll do the best we can to get the concepts across.
