Teaching People to Teach People How to Read!

May 14, 2015 by Gordon and Janet Wohlgemut

I love reading!

I love teaching!

I love teaching people to read!

I love teaching people how to teach others to read!

So this week has been quite fun!  20 new students now understand how to teach someone to read in their own language.  And as you can see, they enjoyed it and worked hard!  Everyone had to create the first 8 pages of a Literacy Primer using the syllable method.  Initial groans were quickly replaced with smiles and even laughter.  Break time came and went unnoticed.  Class was almost over and they wanted to keep working!

One astute student realized that even though this was fun, it will probably be quite a bit harder when they do the real thing.  And he’s correct.

But how fun to teach someone, especially an adult who’s never had an opportunity, to read.  And how fun to see them so excited about God’s Word in their OWN LANGUAGE for the first time!  And able to read it for themselves!

Lots and lots of work is ahead for these young missionaries. I’m so glad I get to be a part in getting them excited and ready!

It is great to see missionaries in training! It is wonderful that these students are willing to go to the unreached with the gospel. God bless each one of them as they labor for Him.
