What are you afraid of?

Daapoi would tell you that God is bigger than whatever you’re afraid of.

After about a week of Bible lessons, Daapoi was walking with his friend, missionary Scott Phillips, on the way to visit another man from Daapoi’s tribe, the Daos of Indonesia.

Scott and Daapoi had gone only a short distance down the trail when Daapoi stopped and said, panic in his voice, “I dropped my cigarette! I dropped it!”

Now, maybe you’re thinking, “He must be pretty poor to be panicked over losing a cigarette.” Or perhaps you thought, “Good! Smoking is bad for you!” But Daapoi’s thoughts were miles away from that.

“You’ve to help me find it,” he told Scott, “because a spirit could get hold of it and then cause me to die!”

Just superstition? Not to Daapoi. He’s grown up believing that kind of thing, grown up among people who all believe that kind of thing.

But that left Scott in a quandary. His friend was asking for help, but he didn’t want to reinforce Daapoi’s belief system by helping him look. Before Scott could figure out what to do, Daapoi suddenly stopped looking for his cigarette and turned to Scott with a big smile.

"You know what?" said Daapoi, "The Creator is bigger than the spirits, the Creator can protect me! I don’t have to be afraid of them!" He walked off down the trail leaving the cigarette behind.

Just beginning to hear God’s Word is having a huge impact on Daapoi and the other Dao people. God is already changing their minds – and their lives.
