Believer accused of killing baby

October 4, 2007 by

Guarijio woman and child

How do you feel when you’re accused of something you didn’t do?

Now imagine you were being accused of killing a baby.

And that you knew the baby died of an illness and no one was really to blame.

That’s what happened to Enedina. And more.

Among Enedina’s people, the Guarijio people of Mexico, no one just gets ill, let alone dies. Their traditional beliefs say illness or death means one of their spirits has left them, perhaps because someone put a curse on them.

So when Olivia’s infant daughter died, Olivia’s mother accused Enedina of being responsible.

Of course, this causes strife among families, so Guarijios accused of causing illness or death are expected to leave the area for a few months until things calm down.

Enedina doesn’t want to. She’s placed her faith in Christ, and she knows the baby’s death is not her fault. But what’s more important to her is that leaving would validate tribal beliefs in spirits and curses.

Staying could put Enedina and her family in a difficult, perhaps even dangerous, situation. But it could also be exactly what God desires for her to do.

What exactly is God asking you to do?
