A wild 7-4 English Premier League soccer match last fall has brought to light an interesting phenomenon.
It seems Reading – on the 4 end of the 7-4 – has an odd effect on people.
After the 11th goal was scored, Sky Sports reporter Ian Darke, reporting from the game, said, "I’m running out of fingers."
How many fingers does he have?
After the game, a BBC commentator commentated: "The fans certainly didn’t expect to see 10 goals scored."
Ummm … 7 plus 4 equals …?
Blame it on the wild game if you want. But earlier in 2007, Reading defender Michael Duberry had this to say about his performance against Liverpool superstar forward Frenando Torres:
"At the end of the day, he scored three goals. Other than that, I kept him pretty quiet."
Bear in mind that any time you score two goals in a soccer game, you’re having a big day.
And during a half, commenting on radio during a different Reading game, Martin Keown said, "If we talk about the game for those people who didn’t see the first half …"
Well, that’d be the entire radio audience, wouldn’t it?
