Spreading word of the cure

You probably know someone with diabetes. If you don’t, you may soon. It’s a fast-growing disease with no cure.

A young lady on a soccer team I coached has diabetes. So does one of my co-workers. And the disease runs in Julie’s family.

So I was grateful about this time last year when David Houle, my son’s soccer coach, offered me an opportunity to help find a cure through the Tour de Cure. Last year he rode his bicycle to raise funds for diabetes research. This year, he’s working behind the scenes so more than 800 riders can participate in the Orlando area, and I’ve again given to this important cause.

While that was on my mind, I asked my co-worker who has diabetes which he’d prefer:

• Growing up with diabetes and an opportunity to hear the Gospel, or
• Growing up healthy with no opportunity to hear about the gift of salvation.

“That’s a silly question,” he told me. Of course he’d rather have the gift of salvation, he said.

The Gospel is the cure to the disease called sin that all mankind is infected with from birth. But a lot of people in isolated places have never heard about the cure. The fact that you’re reading this tells me that you want to help spread word of the cure for sin.

We’re not riding bicycles, but we’re making it possible for missionaries to serve tribal people in remote villages in Africa, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

New opportunities are opening for our ministry, involving more responsibilities, more media and more travel. These greatly expand our ability to help people like you get involved in spreading the cure, which greatly assists the spread of the Gospel. And it opens up new opportunities for you, our teammates.

I need you to pray that we will have wisdom and discretion in stepping into new areas. One key area is finding the right experts outside NTM to help, and knowing when their help is helpful. Please also pray that God moves hearts to provide the funds our ministry requires; there is no room in our current budget.

I’m also asking you to prayerfully consider doing one, two or three of these:

• Play an ongoing role in spreading the cure with a regular monthly gift
• Take on immediate opportunities through a special gift
• Bring these opportunities to others who would be interested in spreading word of the cure

Those of you who are already giving – thank you! You may wish to prayerfully consider increasing your giving, or adding a special gift for immediate opportunities. Most of all, please share these opportunities. Your role gives you increased credibility when you talk with others about getting involved.

PS It’s no coincidence that God is opening new opportunities for you and Julie and me in this economy. It poses the question: Am I — are you — trusting in money or other people … or are you and I looking to God and trusting Him? Being a missionary challenges – and builds – our faith daily. So does giving generously and sacrificially.

God does not want Julie and me to wait for funds before stepping up to the opportunities He has placed before us. But we will not get far without increased partnership from people like you, and I know that God desires to bless His people by giving them opportunities.

Whether you give, or give more, is between you and God. But Julie and I are counting on your prayers, and we are trusting you to pass this opportunity on to others.
