A building experience

Hawa needed a new house, and no one in her village would help her.

The Landuma people of Guinea build their homes out of sun-dried mud blocks. Every ten years or so, they need to be rebuilt.

That’s when the community normally pitches in, each person knowing that they soon will need the help of everyone else in the community.

But Hawa had placed her faith in Christ, so the people of her village refused to help.

That presented an opportunity – and an obstacle – for the other Landuma believers. They could band together as a community and help Hawa. But if they did so, they would be publicly saying, “We are believers,” and each would risk being ostracized.

Not every believer was ready for that step. But many were, and under the hot sun they labored together with Hawa and missionaries to build her new house.
