The Dao village was buzzing with the big news.
Wakayoo, a very prominent Dao man, was on his way to perform a “Spirit Chasing.” He was come to speak incantations and perform rituals so no one in the village would get sick from evil spirits.
You see, he had heard that ever since Wikipai, a Dao Bible teacher, died, people have heard strange noises and what they call “evil spirit voices” from the direction where he is buried. In October, we told you about his illness and his death.
None of the Dao believers doubt even for a second the existence of these evil spirits or their intention to do harm.
But they have begun to seriously doubt the old ways of chasing these spirits away.
“There is only One that is powerful enough to chase spirits! Only One that they are afraid of and that One is Jesus!” Apiyaawoogi said to several people the other day.
Topewa later confided that she doesn’t think Wakayoo can do anything about the spirits. “Only Jeuss can make those spirits go away,” she said.
Wadamena said the noises and voices don’t bother her like they used to.
“In the past we would have been a lot more fearful of these spirits than we are today because we had not yet heard about Jesus,” she said. “Now we have heard that Jesus has the power to send them away by only His word and so when we are scared, we call out to Jesus.”
