Relationships and respect are very important to the Red Karen people.
Peter and Ochie Bangcong and the believers from their village could not simply walk into another village and begin teaching God’s Word. They needed to demonstrate that they cared, and that they respected the village leaders.
So they asked the village headman, Khun Siah, if they could put on an English camp for the children. Tourism is a very big part of the Thai economy, and people who can speak English can earn more money. The headman welcomed the idea.
Then they asked the headman if they could teach God’s Word in his village, starting with him. He agreed to listen, and the Red Karen believers, assisted by Peter, began sharing God’s Word with him. They started at the beginning – Creation – and covered key Old Testament stories in chronological order. They taught about Jesus’ life and His ministry, and finally His death, burial and resurrection.
The headman, hearing of Jesus’ death for his sins, placed his faith in Christ. And he declared to the whole village that he had believed on Jesus, and gave permission for them to hear this teaching as well.
Today there are more than two dozen believers in his village.
