Have you ever had a bad travel experience?
Most people have. Nothing absolutely terrible springs to my mind as I think about that. Sure, there have been inconveniences, even an adventure, but that’s about it. Oh, right, there was the one time I thought I was going to be executed, but that all worked out. Sorry, I digress …
Since Julie and I are going to Thailand in October, I thought you might enjoy hearing about how another missionary’s trip to Thailand went recently.
“My 33 hour trip back was a bit more eventful than usual,” wrote Tami See, an NTM missionary who serves at Grace Academy. She’s a teacher at the school that serves the children of missionaries in several countries in Southeast Asia, from a variety of organizations.
She crossed 12 time zones, spent two hours waiting out a Texas thunderstorm, froze at Los Angeles International, and enjoyed a free hot shower at the Taipei airport. All in all, it wasn’t 33 hours. She spend 18 hours in airports and 20 hours in flight.
(Our plan involves five hours in airports, 24 hours in airplanes, a 30-hour layover in Bangkok and 13 hours by train. We’ll see how that works out …)
One of Tami’s suitcases took a different route, but caught up to her the next day. Her carry-on was weighed and found to be overweight at one airport. “The first time ever I’ve had one weighed,” she wrote. Thankfully they let me take it anyway.” And a tiny pair of scissors was confiscated in Taiwan.
She’s doing better than four of her fellow teachers. They committed to teaching this term, but have been unable to raise the support they need. Please pray for them, and for the school as it tries to adjust to the changes necessary.
