Recently we enjoyed time with the Kuna churches for their annual leaders’ conference. Zoraida, a Kuna grandma who we had not seen for three years came up to us. She had attended the Bible and literacy classes that I had taught during our last years living in Panama.
During those classes, Zoraida had struggled to learn to read and would always ask prayer that her “eyes would be opened to letters” so that one day she could read God’s Book for herself. Last time we saw her, she was barely able to learn her vowels. I gave her a set of flashcards and encouraged her to keep praying and practicing.
As I greeted my friend recently in Panama, I asked her, “How are you and Jesus doing, Zoraida?” With tears in her eyes, Zoraida held up a much worn Kuna New Testament and showed that it was all marked-up from use. She told us how God has answered her prayers and that in the last three years she has learned to read.
The ladies from her church have continued working with her and now Zoraida takes her turn reading the God’s Book and teaching points from the Bible lessons. She shared that since we have seen her, both her daughter and daughter-in-law have come to know Jesus as their Savior.
So please pray for Zoraida and other Kuna women who are working hard to learn to read, with the goal that they will be able to grow spiritually and to reach out to others with the Gospel message!
