“He’s got the wind and the rain, in His hands…He’s got the wind and the rain, in His hands”…
We had music on for the kiddos. Little did we know how appropriate the song was for the day.
“Look at that cloud!” Jevon burst out excitedly. “It’s cone shaped. I wonder…”
“It’s not a funnel,” I said absent-mindedly, “it’s just a little pointed cloud.” But moments later Jevon saw the “cone” leap downwards and suddenly unmistakeably become a funnel. And we were driving right towards it. As fast as you can safely brake on the interstate, Jevon braked, and pulled off onto the shoulder. The tornado touched down in Billings, and we were close enough to see stuff – huge stuff like big pieces of siding or something – spinning around and around in circles ahead of us, off to our left. We prayed for wisdom, and when the funnel lifted up again, we made our break – jumping back on the interstate and driving out of there quickly.
We thanked Jesus, and sang together “He’s got the wind and the rain, in His hands,” as we drove away from those storms and straight towards a glorious double arched rainbow. We saw lots of rainbows this afternoon. Lots of awesome God-made sky scenes.
Then we drove through three separate hailstorms, cringing and hoping the stones wouldn’t dent our car our crack our windshields, but hey, at least we weren’t scared of getting picked up off the ground anymore. We kept singing the same song.
And here we are, safely in Gillete, Wyoming…having a cozy night together as a family before we hit the road again in the morning. The plan is to visit some friends in South Dakota Monday, and then home to Grandma’s house in Wisconsin by Tuesday.
See you all soon…and Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads…you are doing a monumental task…may you be strengthened and blessed by our Faithful Father God today and always! Enjoy the journey.
Love from Jevon, Danica, Cali, and Karina
