Life Happens

We truly desire to apply ourselves and learn the language. But Life happens! Both the predictable and unpredictable challenges of life take up time that we would like to spend immersing our minds in language and culture. I, Danica, spend a good part of everyday teaching Cali and Karina, who are in 3rd and 1st grade. It is a work I love, but it takes a lot of time and dedication. Jevon ends up taking apart the boat motor and cleaning out the carburatter after a sudden rise in the river water level sinks both boat and motor. Or he gets stuck fixing the generator when it stops working because of bad gasoline. Viruses, bacterial infections, and fungus pose a much bigger problem here in the tropics and we end up spending more time taking care of our own health and our kids than we would back home. Or, just when we least expect it, we get bit by a tapir and have to leave the language learning context, spending a month in town to get a series of vaccines. You just never know what’s going to happen next. God has been right there with us every step of the way, and we know He is in control!  But we can’t help but wonder, sometimes, why He doesn’t clear the way of some of these obstacles to language learning—and future ministry!

We do know one thing – all of these obstacles teach us to DEPEND ON HIM!
