a compass exercise which can be a great help if you are somewhat lost in a wilderness, if you at least have an idea what some of the landmarks in sight are.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-116\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/compass-exercise-triangulation2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"compass exercise - triangulation\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/compass-exercise-triangulation2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/compass-exercise-triangulation2.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here we are (below) with two teammates, exulting in a successful exercise in which we used our compasses to locate the much-sought-after orange tape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-117\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/successful-compass-exercise2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"successful compass exercise\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/successful-compass-exercise2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/files\/2010\/10\/successful-compass-exercise2.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>And this is only the beginning (of the fun).\u00a0 We also have labs involving batteries, solar electric set-ups, chainsaws, plumbing, and much more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the practical skills class is a bunch of rules we have to follow outside of class hours.\u00a0 We are not allowed to use any electrical kitchen or bathroom appliances, and we have a lights-out curfew as we are supposed to be conserving energy in our imaginary solar electric set-up.\u00a0 And we are cooking only from scratch &#8211; no prepared foods allowed!<\/p>\n<p>Best of all: this weekend we venture out into the great Ozark wilderness (sort of wilderness), without a tent.\u00a0 We do get to bring tarps and rope with which to make a makeshift shelter.\u00a0 The forecast for the weekend only threatens a low of 40 degrees, so&#8230;with a few extra layers of clothes we hope the kids will thoroughly enjoy the adventure with us.\u00a0 Hopefully when we get back we will have pictures to share, if we remember to pack in a camera.\u00a0 Speaking of packing&#8230;I better get packing.<\/p>\n<p>Well, have a happy weekend!\u00a0 And stay warm, all of you.<\/p>\n<p>Much love from the Rich family &#8211;
