{"id":559,"date":"2012-09-26T16:27:43","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T21:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/?p=559"},"modified":"2012-09-26T16:27:43","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T21:27:43","slug":"different","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/jevon-rich\/2012\/09\/26\/different\/","title":{"rendered":"Different"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">some things that are an adjustment for me.\u00a0 most of them not better or worse, just different:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>taking a shower 3 times a day and changing clothes because we sweat so much.<\/p>\n<p>someone is clapping at my door.\u00a0 oh wait, that means i&#8217;m supposed to let them in!<\/p>\n<p>i want my friend to know i am waiting at her door.\u00a0 it feels wierd to clap.\u00a0 i&#8217;m supposed to clap.\u00a0 okay i&#8217;m telling myself to clap.\u00a0 this feels wierd.\u00a0 oh hey, it worked.\u00a0 she told me to enter.<\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m sweating and its 7 am.<\/p>\n<p>there&#8217;s no water coming out of this faucet.\u00a0 oh wait, now there is.\u00a0 oh&#8230;sort of.\u00a0 that&#8217;s because its an upstairs apartment.\u00a0 good thing there&#8217;s another faucet coming from the tank on the roof.<\/p>\n<p>no wonder alot of people in the states don&#8217;t think kale is wonderful.\u00a0 the kale here is WAY better!<\/p>\n<p>which rice do i want?\u00a0 i don&#8217;t know which rice i want.\u00a0 they all look like the same rice to me.\u00a0 from one end of the aisle to the other, top shelf to bottom shelf, all full of&#8230;the same rice?\u00a0 please can someone just tell me which rice i want because i&#8217;m not really sure what the question means.<\/p>\n<p>this is not cheddar.<\/p>\n<p>all the milk here is powdered or else the kind in a box &#8211; the UHT ultra-pasteurized stuff.\u00a0 even the yogurt we bought was made from reconstituted milk.\u00a0 i miss halverson milk!\u00a0 in fact i would gladly drink walmart milk right now!<\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m used to everyone in cars being all polite, taking turns at intersections and taking care not to kill anybody.\u00a0 apparently that&#8217;s what my friend from southern brazil is used to, also.\u00a0 i guess this crazy way of driving is a manaus thing, not necessarily brasileiro.\u00a0 i&#8217;m just so happy i&#8217;m not driving.<\/p>\n<p>now there&#8217;s sidewalk.\u00a0 now there&#8217;s not.\u00a0 lots of people walking, though.<\/p>\n<p>ah&#8230;i think thumbs up at the driver means &#8220;can I cross here?\u00a0 are you going to stop?&#8221;\u00a0 if he gives you thumbs up go ahead.\u00a0 if he doesn&#8217;t, don&#8217;t move.\u00a0 if his windows are dark glass..guess.<\/p>\n<p>no carseats.\u00a0 seatbelts?\u00a0 maybe.\u00a0 depends what car you are hitching a ride in.<\/p>\n<p>people are really really nice to you if you are holding a baby.\u00a0 they will put you on the front of an insanely long line.\u00a0 people will touch and talk to the baby.<\/p>\n<p>you cannot flush your toilet paper.<\/p>\n<p>the guest house hostess apologized because the water in the laundry sink where i was giving Isaiah a bath was warm.\u00a0 she explained in portuguese and hand motions that it sometimes heats up sitting in the pipes in the sun, but if you run the water a minute it will be cold again.\u00a0 she ran the warm water out and said something akin to &#8220;there, that&#8217;s better.&#8221;\u00a0 hm&#8230;i think i won&#8217;t tell her that i always gave isaiah a bath in warm water in the states.\u00a0 besides the cold water will cool him off.<\/p>\n<p>you never have to worry about running sink water or flushing the toilet when someone is in the shower if there is only one water temp anyways.\u00a0 but we are blessed with a water heater in one place in our new apartment &#8211; the master bedroom shower.\u00a0 jevon still uses the cold water but i feel blessed to have warm.<\/p>\n<p>rocking a baby in a hammock is more relaxing for the parent than rocking in a chair.\u00a0 in fact you might have to be careful not to fall asleep before the baby.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>instead of excess tomatoes or zucchini piled on the table and someone urging everyone to take what they can use &#8211; bananas.<\/p>\n<p>i think the acai juice in the states probably has two tablespoons of acai in it to heal all your diseases and the rest is probably apple and grape.\u00a0 lol.\u00a0 i really like acai juice.\u00a0 the real stuff.<\/p>\n<p>bars on all the windows.\u00a0 yes.\u00a0 thank you Lord for the protection.\u00a0 glass?\u00a0 maybe, maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>houses are built more open to breathe more.\u00a0 this is a blessing but you can also hear more.\u00a0 at first i kept thinking the people i heard on the street were in my house.\u00a0 now i know better.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>its good that all the floors are tile.\u00a0 that way the black, sooty street dirt that blows up into the house washes off easily.<\/p>\n<p>my mop is a squeegy with a rag wrapped around it.\u00a0 i kind of like it because then i can wash the rag more easily than a mophead.<\/p>\n<p>the houses i&#8217;ve been in are all kept very clean on the inside.\u00a0 the dirtiness in the streets is a big adjustment for me.\u00a0 people say it is alot better than it used to be.<\/p>\n<p>my bread pans are longer and skinnier.\u00a0 i wonder if its the same size but different shape?\u00a0 i guess i&#8217;ll find out the first time i use them.<\/p>\n<p>my cocoa powder has sugar in it already?<\/p>\n<p>i don&#8217;t know where to find stuff here.\u00a0 or how to ask.\u00a0 i figured out by listening how to ask &#8220;where can I buy?&#8221;
