Family News
For those who do not get our monthly updates, we are now in California as of June 10th. We left Ilai and his daughter, Kelli, in New York, always hard and went onto Waukesha, WI for Heather\’s Bible School graduation and then to Idaho to spend three weeks with Brian and his little family. We so enjoyed holding our new baby grandson, Andrew, baby sitting and playing with him.
Now we are enjoying being around Darren here in El Cajon. He often comes over to eat with us if he isn\’t working or at Indian Hills Camp. He graduated from San Diego Christian College in May. He is still wanting to go to Southern Baptist Seminary in Kentucky in the spring. He works a few nights a week taking care of a quadriplegic, but he needs some added work.
Heather is working at trying to find a job, get in a lot of driving for her driver\’s license, jump through the hoops to get into Grossmont Community College. She isn\’t quite sure what direction to follow so pray for wisdom for her to know what classes to take. She desires to do the Lord\’s work overseas one day. At some point she and us need to get her a car. Eventually she will also need a place to live apart from us. These are all great challenges for both her and us.
Ministry
Jim has continued to work on translation. He has completed all of the exegetical work that he needs to finish translating the remaining books of the New Testament. We began talking about the possibility of him taking a trip to PNG in September and Lord willing, he and Gena getting the first draft into Dom of the remaining books. It is exciting how God provided for him to go. So he is leaving September 15 and returning December 3. It will be a long separation, but so worth it for him and Gena to get the remaining books done or at least close to being done. He will also work on the comprehension checking that he needs to do as the translation progresses. He called Gena the other day (he has a cell phone) and Gena is very excited about doing this. There are some other expenses involved in him going, but we know God will provide.
We are believing that the Dom translation will be finished in a few years so we are thinking about the big job of printing the New Testament. In light of that we have had an account opened at our US NTM Home office. If anyone is interested in giving toward the actual printing of the Dom New Testament, you can write a check to New Tribes Mission with a separate note saying that it is for the Dom New Testament account.
Where We Are Now
In the meantime, Jim continues to work on various aspects of the translation. We are now planning our travels and visiting next year. We want to see as many of you as we can. Please let us know if you are interested in us coming to visit, have a home meeting, or SS or church service. We are always happy to talk about Missions and the work that God has given us among the Dom people in Papua New Guinea. Our plans are to begin our travels sometime in the spring of next year and then Lord willing return to the Dom in July 2010.
My contact list got corrupted and the most recent backup that worked was \’07 so I have been scrambling to try and get it back up to speed. If any of you get a printed copy of this letter and want to receive it by email, please email us.
Thank you for standing with us during this extended time home. Your words of encouragement, prayers, phone calls, emails and letters have been a blessing. Please continue as we continue to serve the Dom people by God\’s grace and strength.
Love,
Jim and Judy Burdett
