U Say Orchid, I say Anggrek

January 6, 2008 by Joanna K Jansma

From Orchids to Open Doors

Anggrek…the national word for orchid here in Asia Pacific.  This was one of the first conversations I had with my next-door neighbor when I moved here.  She’s a mother of three children who enjoys working in her itty bitty yard blooming with plants, of which her favorite are the orchids.  I’d join her in her gardening time outside to visit and torture her with my limited language vocabulary.  I have often felt blessed to have friendly neighbors, but this week even more so!  I had gone to church and whoops…left my front door wide open!  Instead of returning home to a house empty of all belongings, my neighbor came over to tell me she had shut my front door and kept an eye on things for me. Such a little thing, but encouraging to be reminded of God’s provision…even in the “blonde moments” of forgetfulness!  Turns out when I moved here, God not only gave me great orchids for scenery, but great neighbors!
