{"id":29,"date":"2009-10-22T14:50:48","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T18:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/joe-evans\/?p=29"},"modified":"2009-10-22T14:50:48","modified_gmt":"2009-10-22T18:50:48","slug":"a-few-frequently-asked-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/joe-evans\/2009\/10\/22\/a-few-frequently-asked-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"A few frequently asked questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Greetings everyone.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s just a few short months before I return to minister in Papua New Guinea. \u00a0Many people have asked about my upcoming trip. \u00a0So I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to answer a few of the more common questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) So where are you going?<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll be heading back to Papua New Guinea, a large island in the South Pacific- just North of Australia.\u00a0 My place of service will be in the Madang Region.\u00a0 For those who were wondering it takes about 36 hours to travel there through Los Angeles and Brisbane, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) When are you going and for how long?<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m planning on leaving early January of 2010.\u00a0 My plan is to stay for a two year term, then return to the USA for a 6 month furlough.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to continue working in PNG for as long as I can, or until the Lord plans otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) What will you be doing there?<\/strong> \u00a0I\u2019ll be working in a support role- doing whatever I can to assist the tribal missionaries in their job of church planting.\u00a0 Which means fixing vehicles, building houses, buying supplies, driving folks to town, loading helicopters, or whatever else is needed to allow them to focus on getting the Gospel out.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Where will you be living?<\/strong>\u00a0 It looks like I\u2019ll be moving back into my old duplex apartment at the Madang center- with most of my old furniture even- stuff I built many years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) What are the living conditions like?\u00a0 Do you have power and water?<\/strong>\u00a0 We do actually have things like town power and running water, but not quite like in the USA.\u00a0 The town power tends to be a bit\u2026 erratic (we average about one blackout a day), but we do have a backup generator.\u00a0 The center also has a well and water tank, so there\u2019s lots of running water.\u00a0 However, my apartment lacks air conditioning, so I\u2019ll have to get used to the heat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>6) So, what\u2019s the climate like?<\/strong>\u00a0 PNG is very close to the equator, and the weather stays pretty constant: hot and humid, especially on the coast.\u00a0 One can usually expect rain every evening, and some locations average about an inch of rain every day.\u00a0 However, if one travels to the Highlands which tend to be about 1 mile above sea level, then it is nice and cool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>7) How does one get around?<\/strong>\u00a0 PNG is a very mountainous country, with very few good roads (all the rain tends to wash them out).\u00a0 So, most long distance travel is done via airplane, either through a missionary flight service, or by the national air line.\u00a0 For trips to town one can rent a mission vehicle.\u00a0 Personally, I\u2019m looking to buy a motorcycle- it\u2019s a lot cheaper and easier way to travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>8 )<\/strong> <strong>What are the people like?<\/strong>\u00a0 The citizens of PNG are pretty neat bunch.\u00a0 The culture is very different from that in the USA- so much so I\u2019d need to write up a whole letter just to explain it.\u00a0 However, the country is very open to missions and missionaries, and the folks tend to be pretty open and friendly.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>9) How can we help?<\/strong>\u00a0 First, please keep me in your prayers.\u00a0 Second, you can help out financially- I\u2019m not paid any kind of salary other than the generous gifts of others.\u00a0 If you would like to assist financially, just click on the link above marked &#8220;give&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>God bless you all\u00a0and thanks once\u00a0again,\u00a0Joe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s just a few short months before I return to minister in Papua New Guinea.
