The trip started off a day late due to a typhoon passing north of the area to be surveyed. A few hours into the trip, a tire went bad on the vehicle which needed to be replaced.
Late in the afternoon they came to a major bridge which had collapsed. Steve wasn’t able to take his vehicle beyond that point, so, sadly, he had to return to the mission center.
Jonathan and the guys walked over to the far side where vans were said to be waiting. When they got there, it was already getting dark and all the vans had gone.
Fortunately, a fellow who owned a motorcycle with a side car, (but with no tail light) volunteered to drive them to the next town. Our destination was an hour away and the man only wanted $12. How could they let an offer like that pass them by? Besides, they didn’t have many other choices.
Jonathan’s glasses became smeared so that he couldn’t see, but he was afraid that if he let go of his grip for a second, he might lose his perch on the rack behind the driver which, although uncomfortable, was better than the cement.
