Even after living here in Mozambique for a year I am still amazed at the way the people here use their heads. They carry just about everything…and I mean just about everything on their heads. Those who have been to Africa know exactly what I mean. I wish I had photos of all the different things that get carried on top of a head. Water is one of the most common things we see being carried since there are many who have no running water in or near their houses. Even those who are connected to the city water system go days or even weeks with no water. Many have get water from someone that has a good well. They will carry a 20 liter container of water on their heads for a long way. Of course building materials like cement, bamboo poles, lumber and even cement blocks can be transported the same way for a price. Many folks carry their wares for sale on their head and it is amazing to see them walk through the city, over holes in the sidewalk, through crowds and in traffic as though there is nothing on their heads. This of course takes a lot of practice and they start at a very young age carrying things like school books on their heads as they go to and from school.
