All Tribes and Tongues!

March 11, 2012 by Josh and Mel Simmons

Hearing the word at a PNG church.

Hello to all my stateside friends and family.  We had the wonderful opportunity to hear a message from a New Guinea pastor this morning.  It was an English speaking service with some pidgin mixed in here and there.  It was good message, and the singing was well done two.  We sang a round of Hymns with the guitar and then with the piano.  We really enjoyed hearing the word preached in and to a culture that are at present still fairly foreign to us.  However, Melody and I both felt a some emotion welling up inside as we looked around and were reminded of what it will be like in heaven we all our brothers and sister from around the world will be singing praises to our Lord and glorifying Him.

We will probably go to a different church for the next several Sunday’s just to give us a good perspective of the state of Christianity in its many flavors here in PNG.  Please continue to pray for us as we immerse ourselves in language and culture study.  While its fun, there is definitely a serious side to it.  Without being able to clearly communicate to the citizens of PNG our ministry will be seriously hampered.  That’s why it is So important that we stick with it and do our due diligence as we strive to learn and build relationships here.

On a lighter note, we tried making pizza for the first time last night and I wish I could say it was smashing success, but in fact it was a disaster.  We tried making Hawaiian Pizza with Pineapple and Ham.  Well the Pineapple wasn’t a problem it was the Ham that really ruined it.  We thought it had a bit of a fishy smell when we opened it, but as we’re determined to try everything before we turn our noses up to it, we added it to the Pizza.  Bit Mistake!  After it was finally done cooking 1:20 minutes later…still haven’t figured that one out, I tasted it and had an instant Gag reflex and ejected it from my mouth pronto!  Score PNG Meat:  2, Simmons 0!  First it was the Hot dogs, now the ham.  We’re getting a little fed up with it.  From now on we aren’t buying meat unless someone experienced gives us the thumbs up!  Well, that’s all for this entry.  Until next time.
