and I collected prayer requests in a jar. Every day we pull a few out and bring them before the Lord. On the first day of school one of my students drew this slip: “for our churches and friends who pray for us and support us.” Know that we love and appreciate the sacrifice you make of your time and resources to keep us in our ministry. Know that four weird kids and an even weirder teacher are praying for you and asking God to richly bless you for your generosity.

God has provided for us in a variety of special ways lately. We found houses for rent that meet our needs and are in the same neighborhood. Now our entire team is within walking distance of each other. In one house are the Alkires and I, with an extra bedroom for the school and a small yard for the dogs. Only two blocks away are the Elkins and Rachel, or “team headquarters” as it seems to be becoming. The Elkins and Rachel took on the monstrous task of feeding 13 people for a week during move-in time. Not only that, but when we gather for team meetings or important events like pizza and movie night that seems to be where we all head. What a gift of hospitality God has blessed that family with! Not far from the Elkins house are the Davises, in beautiful home with room for the kids to spread out a bit and a play area inside.

School started on Labor Day of all things, but we had already postponed enough and were eager to get going. We are now in the middle of week seven and things are going well. Thank you for your prayers as we tread this new territory. The kids love their CD players and a chance to earn time on the laptop, both gifts from my home church in Dowling, MI. In a large “estancia” area at the stairs landing we have created a library with books donated from many of you. Sarah would call it a spoiling moment…one where you see that God not only provides our needs but takes pleasure in surprising us with extras, too. School goes from 9 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon, when our families eat “comida” or the Mexican main meal. In September we celebrated “Talk Like a Pirate Day” with pirate poetry for writing class, a treasure map (map reading skill are important, you know) and Muppet Treasure Island. (It’s a real day, by the way, I don’t make this stuff up). What a hearty group of scurvy dogs!

Another item that is in the school’s prayer request jar and on our hearts is the Nahuatl people. We are asking God for their continued health and safety until they can hear the gospel and that the Holy Spirit will be preparing their hearts to hear the Word. We have a long way to go and are eager to be there and be learning the language. In a recent trip to the tribe, our team discovered that enough bricks have been completed to start one of the team’s houses. Praise God for another example of provision and pray that we can quickly start construction and move in.

Thank you, as always, for your faithfulness to pray for me, encourage me to stay faithful to the task before me, and support me financially.

At the beginning of the school year
