Teaching literacy stretches us.

March 29, 2012 by Lourens Laureti

As most you know we are placing emphasis on having people able to read because, ‘What’s the point of having God’s Word in your language, if you can’t read it?’

In our village I have been helping out seeing the Literacy program running smoothly.

It’s a slow process with some people especially the ladies. But the fact that they can now learn to read Gods word is an incredible motivation for them.

As so many other missionaries know, it’s not just students coming to class, sitting down in a quiet environment, and studying or listening to the teaching. Mothers come in with their children and find themselves keeping one eye on their babies and the other eye on their flashcards. Often kids are having in string bags tied to a rafter. Some of them are swinging the one to sleep while nursing the other!

Just think if you would be able to do so? All of this at once in class while you say your syllables and write your letters? Not to mention, the dogs pigs etc

As we consider this, let us consider the great gift of literacy and appreciate Gods Word by reading it!
