I\u2019ll talk to you again in a few months.\u201d\u00a0 We had a mini 2-week &#8216;taste&#8217; of this: \u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Practical Skills\/Simple Living<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0class, during which we cut ourselves off from modern conveniences .<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-OKeLoJrmUEw\/UJfkH2coHdI\/AAAAAAAAAp0\/8apqDhFCtmY\/s200\/DSC_3531.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"132\" \/><\/div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Making flour tortillas with daddy<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span>We practiced \u2018supply buying\u2019- ordering our food for the next 2 weeks via radio, having another team purchase our supplies for us. We likewise shopped for a different team.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Scratch cooking only- no kitchen appliances (incl. microwave, coffee maker, bread machine, kitchenaid, crock pot\u2026), no prepackaged, instant, or processed foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Internet and phone use: 1 hour per week (and no social networking, shopping, or recreational internet usage).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Limited electricity: At 8pm each evening we had to turn off every light and rely on candles\/flashlights.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-rXRBMMnEu5Y\/UJfkx-aECmI\/AAAAAAAAAqA\/7t0vUIb6Um0\/s200\/DSC_3546.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>homemade soft pretzels!!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The biggest impact this had on us was imagining what it may feel like to be out of touch with family and friends- both from the lack of face-to-face contact, and coming out of a culture so deep into instant social networking. In all honesty, it\u2019s already been difficult over these years of training to be away from \u2018home\u2019- it is tempting to feel like we are forgotten about since we\u2019re not there (and we\u2019re still in the States with phones and internet!).\u00a0<strong>We\u2019re increasingly aware of the need to be encouraging each other as the Body of Christ and praying for one another.\u00a0<em>Challenge: Contact a missionary, or even a long-distance friend\/family member! It will encourage them!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-i4B6PKvfxPo\/UJf3uQp4N1I\/AAAAAAAAArE\/pEDQj3BQcoA\/s320\/DSC_3515.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-i4B6PKvfxPo\/UJf3uQp4N1I\/AAAAAAAAArE\/pEDQj3BQcoA\/s320\/DSC_3515.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>ready for our Practical Skills Outing!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In mid-October, we had a Practical Skills Outing (not a Family Fun Center type of \u201couting\u201d, in case you were getting excited)\u2026 a wilderness camping experience. We used a compass to locate our campsite (aka: random spot in the woods), and built a shelter (waterproof, \u2018warm\u2019) with tarps. Noe built a fantastic shelter (see photos), and we spent three chilly nights there with some of our classmates, with classes \u00a0(i.e. knife sharpening, chainsaws, chicken butchering, etc.), and cooking our meals over a fire. We also experienced some likely on-the-field scenarios, such as no power or no running water for 1-2 days.<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-QlNeEAjXSH0\/UJfllaQlHCI\/AAAAAAAAAqQ\/SnckeeTiVH4\/s200\/IMG_5198.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>working together to build our shelter<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-T0DBxr8k3yA\/UJfmDL40_EI\/AAAAAAAAAqc\/rjdKjI7XZRM\/s200\/IMG_5217.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>the completed shelter!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Our\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Teaching Considerations<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0class reminded us that the way and the method we use to teach Biblical truths in our Western culture may not connect at all with a tribal person\u2019s culture and context!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Similarly, the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Curriculum Development<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0class emphasizes the fact that learning language is NOT sufficient for translating and teaching God\u2019s Word in a way that the people will understand! A teacher of the Bible MUST understand the culture, beliefs, behaviors and motivations, and influences of the people being spoken to! (Then next semester&#8217;s Linguistics course for Lisa)<\/li>\n<li>1 year from now, we anticipate having just moved to Seattle to prepare for the field!<\/li>\n<li>Jocellyn turned 3 on November 2nd!<\/li>\n<li>We have finished developing new photo cards! Expect newsletters and photo cards in your mailbox (yes, your real mailbox) soon!
