{"id":338,"date":"2015-09-10T00:21:03","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T00:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swensontribe.wordpress.com\/?p=338"},"modified":"2015-09-10T00:21:03","modified_gmt":"2015-09-10T00:21:03","slug":"why-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/paul-swenson\/2015\/09\/10\/why-read\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Read?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>The Importance of Literacy&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color:#003366\">Imagine your life for one day without the ability to read.\u00a0 More importantly&#8230; where would your relationship with\u00a0the Lord be\u00a0if you could not read your Bible and no one around you could either?\u00a0 As our final semester of training begins, we are looking\u00a0into the importance of literacy to young tribal churches.\u00a0 As you know,\u00a0we plan to\u00a0work in a tribe in Papua New Guinea and teach them what God&#8217;s Word says and, one day, be training up the young believers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0However, we cannot teach these people forever.\u00a0 In fact, our goal would be to leave an indigenous church that is self-sustainable apart from western help.\u00a0\u00a0Our ministry will eventually end.\u00a0 Even though these\u00a0tribal groups typically\u00a0depend on oral stories, these stories change with time and\u00a0the generations&#8230; oral traditions are not dependable enough for God&#8217;s Word.\u00a0 AND there is MUCH to learn in God&#8217;s\u00a0Word.\u00a0 The tribal people that we will go to\u00a0minister to need\u00a0to be able to read and understand the Bible for themselves and their leaders will one day need to be able to teach from God&#8217;s Word.\u00a0 Missionaries will one day leave, but the Bible will stay with them.\u00a0 We know that God&#8217;s Word is powerful and the people we go to work with will need to learn to read it.\u00a0\u00a0This semester has started with\u00a0our learning how to teach literacy to adults and children who have never read before in their own language.\u00a0 Currently,\u00a0we are practicing writing basic reading primers in a fictitious language as practice\u00a0for doing this one day\u00a0for real!\u00a0 We will be teaching literacy AFTER we&#8217;ve learned their language&#8230;
